ChamaH jav - Retreat

[Instead of dinosaurs, Chang's object of interest is this, if a little more scuffed up. He holds it to the camera, holding it at various angles. His voice appears from behind the camera.] It is the month of Merruthj.

[He finds that funny. It is the Klingon for 'retreat'. The camera's focus goes to him.] It is the second time we have arrived at a world that humanity's grasp exceeded wisdom. All this... scientific progress, to be packaged and sold.

[His jaw tightens and he flings the box aside.]

Capitalism disgusts me. To think these animals were engineered only for entertainment. They expected children to come here.

[He's having a "why is everything genetically engineered bad?" moment, too.]

Capitalism. [Ponders, he's not one to think in those terms.] It is the fact that it is couched in naivety, as if their idea is… ambitious enough, then the consequences will… [He shrugs. Vanish? Simply become less important? What's few eaten kids?]

She's correct in that other races have them. [Referring to Frances.] But it's no less a stunting and unsympathetic trait.

Any 'correct' aspect she may have is stunted by the fact that she is dismissing it in the same breath. It is not a matter of non-experience, it is purely a matter of hubris! She knows not of what she speaks beyond an academic interest!

I will be grateful for their hubris even if borne of incompetence. Those well-meaning frogs give scorpions like those on this island and myself our lives.

These animals have proven themselves survivors.

[Thoughtfully.] This a small island for large creatures permitted to breed. Time will tell.

What was the other one? [It's hard to tell with Chang.]

The port with the… infection. The 'zombies'?

Oh. Yeah. I remember you telling me about that one.

If I were to use solely experience to guide me, then I would suggest that there is no single culture that does not have its blights and its moments of weakness. No one person or society is born enlightened and their mistakes must be acknowledged and revered or risk repeating them.

They repeat them anyway. This… [He indicates the island.] is not the product of a society newly born. Civilisations are rarely born with the knowledge to create polymers either.
